The Journey So Far

In 2023, Braunton Women formalised their position within the club and moved from being a purely social focus, to joining the Devon Women’s Softball Cricket League. Many women who joined us, had never played cricket before, some had never picked up a cricket bat or ball, let alone bowled a ball (overarm), others hadn’t played for several years. We recognise women and girls play sport for different reasons and softball cricket is one of the most inclusive sports around, as it allows varying abilities to participate in a collective manner.

It was important that we remained true to the ethos of ‘Softball’ cricket and endeavour to make it a sport for all, while retaining as much fun as possible. 2023 appeared to demonstrate that we got that balance right. The summer season proved (not unexpectedly) to be a slow start,  but as word travelled, participation and enjoyment increased, so did the numbers. Involvement in team sports can sometimes be a challenge for North Devon teams, requiring additional time and travel, but we worked through it. With effort and focus on our bowling, from coaches, Julie & Dean, These same players who hadn’t touched a bat or ball are now flourishing and thoroughly enjoying the feel bowling and batting gives them. We performed respectfully for our first season and on reflection I suspect the biggest driver to play was the rocky road and lemon drizzle cakes.

During the end of season social, it became clear that many women joined the cricket team to establish networks, having either recently moved to the area or following a change in circumstances.

Whatever your personal reason might be for considering cricket as a sport, we encourage you to grasp the opportunity and see what it offers you and what you might offer it… Numbers are growing but more importantly so too is the interest and attendance, which helps build the team. You know what they say, ‘it takes a village, people!’

We may not be the best, but we are the best we can be… and have fun doing it.

What is Softball Cricket? – The key is inclusion – everyone can participate, irrespective of previous experience. A lighter weight bat and ball, means handling the equipment is less of a challenge. The rules are adapted to fucus on levelling up any disparities. Therefore, each batter has the same time ‘in’ and even when they are ‘out’ they are still ‘in’. Similarly, the bowling structure aims to give as many people the chance to bowl as practically want to. The scoring while retaining some traditional elements, emphases team as opposed to individual success. For more information see the Devon Cricket Women’s Softball Website.

Sometimes the best way to gain greater insight is to come along and have a look or have a try.

Training evenings – Tuesdays at Braunton Cricket Club 7-8pm. We mix up the focus, depending on weather and what we need and want to concentrate on. Although there is an underlying desire to improve our skills and diversify our experiences, we are true to our aim that the sessions remain enjoyable for all.
